PetroQuip’s innovative PASS Tool and APCV III for reliable remote operation
A major Gulf of Mexico operator installed PetroQuip’s Pressure Actuated Sliding Sleeve or PASS™ Tool along with PetroQuip’s industry leading Annular Production Control Valve (APCV™ III) in the Frac Pack Completion of a single trip perf/pack single zone well. The PASS Tool is designed to replace the mechanical shifting sleeve typically installed to handle production after stimulation. A second mechanical sleeve was installed in the lower section of the screen assembly in order to take returns during the stimulation.
Before the start of the lower completion operations, the well was cleaned up using a 6.00” bit and scraper assembly inside of the 7” casing. The single zone was completed using a Single Trip Perforate/Pack technique, where the well was perforated and frac-packed in a single trip. An interval of ~73ft was perforated using TCP guns with an HDF (hydraulic delay) firing head in 10.4ppg brine, the guns were released from the downhole assembly and dropped into the rat-hole during the perforating operation.
Once the perforations were made, the well was controlled using the Frac Pack tools in the string. The perforating packer was then unset, the screens placed across the perforated interval and then the sand control packer was set.
The job was pumped at 20bpm and screened out at ~5500psi successfully. Excess gravel was reversed out of the tubing string via reverse circulating two tubing volumes of 10.4ppg brine to surface. Once the frac-pack operation was finished, the service tool and wash pipe was removed, isolating the well via the set sand control packer and the APCV II valve within the 3-way crossover assembly. The APCV II valve (and Port Closure Sleeve) were pressure tested to 500psi for 10minutes successfully. The well was then displaced to 8.7ppg KCl for the running of the upper completion. The seal assembly, nipple profiles, gas lift mandrels and safety valve were all run on a 2 7/8” 6.5# L80 completion string.
The string was pressure tested while running into the well and then landed inside of the sand control packer. The APCV III with PASS tool was then opened for production via applied pressure to the tubing string and then bleeding off as per the PetroQuip procedures.
Since this well, this operator has deployed a number of PASS Tools and APCV III’s in order to mitigate risk and reduce cost. There have been many different configurations and well designs. In all of the applications, the PASS Tool and APCV III have performed as designed. It is expected that this technology will be deployed in many future wells around the world.
